University museums are as diverse as the subjects taught and the
departments included. That is why ICOM has always distinguished between
them and instituted ( more or less) specific international committees These
international committees derive strength from a shared pool of specific
knowledge and experience. The observation that so many university museums
are in dire need of money and that they need re-organisations etcetera,
does not in itself warrant a successful international committee. Museums
which find themselves in a war zone, may wish to cooperate, but donot need
an international committee. On the other hand, university museums with
important Egyptian collections may join Egyptology, and those with
ethnographic collections ICME. In other words, I am not much in favour of a
new International Committee for University Museums.
