ICOM is shocked by the violent attack on innocent people in Madrid on the
11th of March. My sympathy goes to all victims and their relatives. It is
difficult to understand why such violence continues to threathen not only
the people of Spain, but people all over the world. Violence like this
leads to nothing but great sadness and dismay.

There is no alternative but to strengthen our efforts for peace and mutual
understanding. This is where ICOM stands for and which it will always
defend. Museums for Peace and Harmony in Society was the theme of our
International Museum Day in 2000 and this is more relevant than ever.

I am sure that our National Committee in Spain will do its utmost to play
its role in the service of society and assist and help where possible to
overcome the grief of the Spanish people.

Be aware that ICOM stands side by side with you.

President
