INTERNATIONAL COUNCIL OF MUSEUMS (ICOM ):
INTERNATIONAL COMMITTEE FOR THE TRAINING OF PERSONNEL - ICTOP

1999 ANNUAL MEETING: LONDON, ENGLAND, 1 - 7 JULY 1999:
"NEW DEVELOPMENTS IN MUSEUM AND HERITAGE EDUCATION AND TRAINING"

ICTOP has accepted the invitation from the Department of Arts Policy and
Management, City University, to hold its 1999 annual meeting at the
Barbican, City of London, (nearest stations: Barbican, Moorgate, Liverpool
Street and St. Paul's) from Thursday 1 July to Wednesday 7 July 1999.

The main theme of the meeting with be:

"New developments in museum and heritage education and training".

In addition to the papers on the main theme selected for presentation
and discussion, the programme will also include:

Sessions for a "Market of Ideas" and regional/institutional progress
reports on museum professional, technical or management education and
training.

"Poster" (including publications) displays on recent developments (as above)

Study visits, including a full day visit to historic Portsmouth and its
remarkable range of national, local authority and voluntary sector museums

Discussion of the future development of ICOM overall, and of ICTOP within
ICOM and the wider museum world, for submission to the major review of
the future organisation of ICOM proposed unanimously by the 1998 General
Assembly of ICOM in Melbourne, and the decision of the ICTOP Melbourne
General Assembly.

If there is sufficient demand the University will try to organise a one
day "hands on" training day on Web authoring and management on Thursday
8 July (at a modest additional cost). We are also hoping to arrange a
block booking for an evening dinner and traditional entertainment cruise
on the River Thames (at additional cost), but the details of summer 1999
schedules and prices are not yet available.

There are direct flights to one or more of London's five airports
(Heathrow, Gatwick, Stansted, London City and Luton International) from
around 400 cities around the world. Most offer very inexpensive excursion
fares and from most parts of the world flight plus accommodation inclusive
tours are also available. It is likely that many overseas participants
will therefore have their London accommodation included in their travel
"package", but we will aim to reserve some high quality student
accommodation near the University for those who require it.

The fee for the meeting is likely to be about UK£60 (approx. US$ 100)
including the day visit to Portsmouth. The cost of an optional
post-meeting Web training day would be about UK£40 (approx. US$ 70)
because of the University's computer services charges.

CALL FOR PAPERS (DEADLINE FOR PROPOSALS: 15 MARCH 1999):

We are seeking offers of contributions about recent or proposed developments
etc. relevant to the main meeting theme outlined above, and in relation to
any area of museum training. More obvious possibilities arising out of
recent discussions might include initiatives and training developments
for museums in relation to peace and reconciliation, sustainable development,
safety policy and management, risk management and insurance, emergency and
disaster preparedness, response and recovery, plus updates on developments
since the 1997 Berlin meeting in information technology management and
Internet-based museum education and training.

At this stage only an abstract of not more than one page is required. The
deadline for submission of the full text of papers selected by the
Programme Committee for the meeting's programme will then be 1 May 1999,
so that the meeting's volume of Pre-prints can be prepared and printed in
time for the start of the meeting. Offers of contributions for the
"Market of Ideas" etc. and for "Poster Sessions" are also welcome at
this stage.

PLEASE COMPLETE THE ENCLOSED FORM TO OFFER CONTRIBUTIONS
(OR JUST TO RECORD YOUR INTEREST IN ATTENDING THE MEETING) AND RETURN IT
BY 15 MARCH 1999 TO:
