Queridos colegas y amigos:

Deseo felicitar al nuevo Consejo Ejecutivo del ICOM y al Secretariado por
la página "Disaster Relief for Museums". Me parece un buen ejemplo de
reacción rápida y eficaz ante una situación de emergencia y a la vez una
valiosa fuente de información actualizada día a día. Pero es a mi entender
es tambiéun un útil  instrumento de futuro.
Aunque en esta ocasión la magnitud de la tragedia y en especial el elevado
número de victimas provocado por el  tsunami ha producido un gran impacto
en la sociedad, debemos recordar que cada año llegan al ICOM noticias de
museos y de profesionales afectados por conflictos bélicos, pillaje o
catástrofes naturales, que tal vez por no aparecer en los medios de
comunicación parecen menos importantes pero que afectan por igual a quienes
los sufren.
Por eso creo que la página debería tener una continuidad informando de las
situaciones de emergencia que afectan a los museos y a sus profesionales en
diferentes partes del mundo.
Lo mismo opino sobre el Fondo de Ayuda (Disaster Relief Fund for Museums),
una magnífica idea, que el ICOM debería mantener y promover con la
colaboración de sus miembros y otras instituciones. Leyendo los mensayes
enviados a ICOM-L durante estas últimas semanas creo que no faltan las
ideas para hacerlo posible.

Dear colleagues and friends,

I would like to congratulate the new Executive Council of ICOM and the
Secretariat for the Disaster Relief Web site. I think it is a good example
of a quick reaction to an emergency and it is also a valuable source of
information updated on a daily basis. Besides,  I see it as a useful toof
for the future too.
Although the magnitude of the disaster and especially the big amount of
victims by the tsunami have caused a great impact on the society, we must
remeber that ever year ICOM receives news of museums and professionals
affected by war, pillage or natural catastrophes. withouth mass media
attention- This is why I believe that the Web site must continue and inform
regulary of emergency situations affecting museums and professionals all
over the world.
I feel the same about the Disaster Relief Fund for Museums, a splendid idea
that ICOM should be able to maintain and promote with the collaboration of
its members and other institutions. The late messages on ICOM-L indicate
that there are plenty of ideas to make it possible.
