Hi all,

I can only agree with Bishnu. I was able to speak recently to Alissandra, mentioned the news received through MAC and conveyed my congratulations to her.

We must thank Inchi however for writing such an excellent letter to John Zvereff on our behalf.

Thanks Inchi!

Elfrieda

Dear John Zvereff
Secretary General ICOM

On behalf of the Museum Association of the Caribbean (MAC), I want to extend the congratulations to Ms Alissandra Cummins , actual ICOM's president, with the UNESCO's recognition to her as one of the 60 women who have worked toward building a culture of peace.

We feel honored with this recognition especially as Caribbean citizens and Caribbean Museums Organization, MAC, of which Ms. Cummins was the initiator twenty years ago.
We admire the enormous efforts she invested in addressing key issues of the Caribbean identity and the role of the modern museums in the construction of community empowerment & emancipation of silenced colonial histories.
Her advocacy for an active participation of the cultural heritage institutes in creating appropriate cultural policies at the national and regional levels inspires us in working on common Caribbean priorities & pride and sharing our experiences with the international community.

UNESCO Director-General Koïchiro Matsuura launched a new book entitled 60
Women Contributing to the 60 Years of UNESCO - Constructing the Foundations
of Peace (UNESCO, 2006).

This tribute to the contributions of women to dialogue, education,
empowerment and gender equality recognizes 60 women who have worked toward
building a culture of peace. Alissandra Cummins ( Barbados ) was honored
alongside 59 other women leaders including Maria de Lourdes Pintasilgo
( Portugal ), Sophie N’Kanwza (Democratic Republic of Congo ), Jeanne Hersch
(Switzerland), Gabriela Mistral (Chile) and Françoise Riviére (France) et
Rigoberta Menchù ( Guatemala ).

In 60 Women, ICOM President Alissandra Cummins shares her vision of
UNESCO based on her experience, support of cultural diversity and the
pivotal role of “culture” within the Organization:

“UNESCO is in truth a laboratory of ideas, while at the same time remaining
true at the core to the notion that if we are to have peace, security,
health, freedom, and happiness, then nations must care for and accept
responsibility for the well-being of other countries, and people must
support each other and come to understand, respect and appreciate the
diversity inherent in difference (…)”

We are pleased to share this information with our ICOM-L subscribers as this
implicit recognition of the contribution of our President also honours our
organisation.
