ICOM UK 1999 AGM: Tuesday, 28 September 1999, Edinburgh

The 1999 Annual General Meeting of ICOM UK will be held in the Pentland
Theatre, Edinburgh International Conference Centre, Edinburgh at 18:00 on
Tuesday 28th September 1999. The AGM has been scheduled to coincide with the
Museums Association annual conference and we hope that members will take the
opportunity to combine the events. Members who are unable to attend the full
Museums Association conference should note that access to the ICOM UK AGM is
free, as is attendance at the preceding conference session organised by ICOM
UK on the subject of Working with Museums in Developing Countries. ICOM UK
members may also visit the conference trade fair and the Marketplace of
ideas at which ICOM UK will be represented (see below).

ICOM UK and the 'Marketplace of ideas' at the Museums Association
Conference: Tuesday, 28 September 1999, Edinburgh

Participants at the Museums Association Conference are invited to call in at
the ICOM UK stand in the Marketplace of ideas, 10:00-16:00 on Tuesday 28
September. If you know a non-member at the Conference who might be
encouraged to join ICOM UK, please bring them along.

'Working with Museums in Developing Countries': ICOM UK session at the
Museums Association Conference: Tuesday, 28 September 1999, Edinburgh

The theme of this year's Museums Association Annual Conference is The
Challenge of Change: Gearing up for the next century. As part of the
conference, ICOM UK has organised a session to review recent innovative
approaches in working with museums in developing countries. Speakers will
include Elisabet Olofsson, co-ordinator of ICOM Sweden's Swedish African
Museum Program, Lisette Ferera, International Relations Counsellor at the
Musée de la Civilisation, Quebec, talking about ICOM Canada's programme of
international co-operation, and Andrew Roberts, talking about CIDOC's
involvement with the AFRICOM project. The session has been organised by Jane
Weeks ([log in to unmask]) and will be chaired by Aidan Walsh.

The session will be held on Tuesday 28 September in the Pentland Suite,
Edinburgh International Conference Centre. It will start at 16:45 and will
be followed by the ICOM UK AGM. The Museums Association has generously
agreed to waive the daily conference attendance fee for ICOM UK members
wishing to attend the session.

ICOM-UK/MGC Joint Seminar on International Opportunities for Museums:
Thursday, 2 December 1999, Museum of London

The Museums & Galleries Commission (MGC) and ICOM-UK are organising a
one-day seminar on international opportunities for museums and galleries.
This is centred around a research project carried out for the MGC by Judi
Caton, a freelance consultant, and the resultant publication, Going up in
the World, which is being published as part of the MGC's series of
Guidelines for Good Practice publications. The event will be held at the
Museum of London on Thursday 2 December. It will provide an important
opportunity for museums to debate issues raised by the research, such as
identifying key international opportunities and recognising their importance
for the development of museums in the UK.  Speakers will include Judi Caton;
Henrietta Hopkins, MGC; Rosalind Johnson, the Library and Information
Commission (LIC); and a representative from the Department of Culture, Media
and Sport (DCMS). The afternoon will comprise break-out sessions, to enable
participants to have detailed discussion on the issues raised, and a
reporting back plenary session.

To book a place, please contact Elaine Sansom, Secretary, ICOM UK
([log in to unmask]). For information on how to purchase the
publication Going up in the World: Guidelines for good practice on
international opportunites, contact MGC Publications ([log in to unmask]).

ICOM UK and the Museums Association report into illicit trade

ICOM UK and the Museums Association have jointly commissioned a report into
the illicit trade in cultural property and natural science material and its
implications for museums in the UK. The report is intended to be a
hard-hitting account of the problem of the illicit trade and will serve as a
launch pad for a campaign to urge government to take measures that will
limit its disastrous effects. The report also aims to alert museums to the
risks of acquiring illicit material.

The report is being written by the Illicit Antiquities Research Centre, part
of the McDonald Institute for Archaeological Research at the University of
Cambridge. It is due for publication in late 1999 or early 2000.

A small steering group is overseeing the report: the ICOM UK representatives
are Louise Smith ([log in to unmask]) and Patrick Boylan
([log in to unmask]).
