>The International Committee of the Blue Shield (ICBS) expresses its sorrow
and solidarity with the Italian people for the loss of lives and the
destruction caused by the earthquake, and its continuing aftershocks, which
took place on Monday 6 April in the Abruzzo region in Italy.
>
>L\'Aquila, the regional capital of the Abruzzo region and epicenter of the
quake, was founded in the 13th century and constitutes one of the most
important urban ensembles dating from the Middle-Ages in Italy. Its devastated
historic center contains many Romanesque, Gothic, Baroque, and Renaissance
buildings, as well as important museums, private collections, archives and
libraries. Its surrounding villages also contain many architectural treasures.

>Whilst the highest priorities must be accorded to minimising the loss of life
and to the humanitarian activities intended to re-establish decent living
conditions for the thousands of people whose homes and means of subsistence
have been wrecked by this natural disaster, the International Committee of the
Blue Shield, founded in 1996 \'to work to protect the world\'s cultural heritage
threatened by wars and natural disasters\', places the expertise and networks
of its member organisations at the disposal of their Italian colleagues and
the Italian authorities to support their work in assessing the damage to the
cultural heritage of Aquila and the surrounding region, including libraries,
archives, museums and monuments and sites, and subsequent recovery,
restoration and repair measures.

>ICBS also calls on the international community to give the fullest possible
support to the efforts, official and voluntary, underway to rescue this rich
and unique heritage.

>Fully aware of the great internal resources of Italy when it comes to
heritage and heritage recovery, the member organisations of the ICBS are
currently liaising with Italian colleagues and members, to obtain further
information on both the situation of professional colleagues in the area and
on the possible needs and type of help required, so as to mobilize our
networks accordingly. A more complete report on damages, needs and actions
will be published subsequently, so as to facilitate coordination.

>Le Comité international du Bouclier bleu (ICBS) exprime son chagrin et sa
solidarité avec le peuple italien à la suite des pertes humaines et des
destructions causées par le tremblement de terre qui a eu lieu lundi 6 avril
dans la région des Abruzzes (Italie) et par les continuelles secousses qui ont
suivi.
>
>Aquila, capitale régionale des Abruzzes et épicentre du séisme, a été fondée
au XIIIe siècle et représente l\'un des ensemble urbains médiévaux les plus
importants en Italie. Son centre historique, dévasté, comprend de nombreux
monuments romans, gothiques, baroque et Renaissance, ainsi que des musées, des
collections privées, des archives et des bibliothèques importants. Les
villages alentour sont également dotés de nombreux trésors architecturaux.
>
>S\'il convient de donner la plus haute priorité aux actions visant à réduire
les pertes humaines, et aux interventions humanitaires permettant de rétablir
des conditions de vie décentes pour les milliers de personnes dont les
habitations et les moyens de subsistance ont été détruits par cette
catastrophe naturelle, le Comité international du Bouclier bleu, fondé en
1996 « pour protéger le patrimoine culturel mondial menacé par les guerres et
les désastres naturels » met son expertise et les réseaux de ses
organisations membres à la disposition des collègues et des autorités
italiens, pour soutenir leur travail en matière d\'évaluation des dommages qui
ont affecté le patrimoine culturel d\'Aquila et de la région, qui comprend les
bibliothèques, les archives, les musées, les monuments historiques et les
sites, et dans le cadre des mesures qui seront prises pour sauvegarder,
restaurer et réparer ce patrimoine.

>ICBS lance également un appel à la communauté internationale pour fournir le
meilleur soutien possible aux efforts, qu\'ils soient officiels ou volontaires,
déjà engagés pour sauver ce patrimoine riche et unique.

>Tout à fait conscientes que l\'Italie dispose de grandes ressources en ce qui
concerne le patrimoine et sa sauvegarde, les organisations membres d\'ICBS
assurent actuellement la liaison avec les collègues et les membres italiens du
Bouclier bleu pour obtenir des informations plus précises à la fois sur la
situation des collègues dans la région, et sur les besoins éventuels et les
types d\'aide requis, afin de mobiliser nos réseaux en conséquence. Un rapport
