Dear Mario,

Patrick and Colette are more than right. Some
national and international committees already
have active groups of young museum professionals,
who are bringing new blood and bright new ideas
to us 'old' members. This is the case of
ICOFOM. We do not want to loose our brilliant young members...

Maybe we should consider the officialization of
the presence of young members in national and
international committees, with special
rights. They may even meet in a specific 'forum'
at the General Conferences, without loosing their
membership to the committees of origin.

So, the first thing would be to establish what
ICOM understands as 'young' professionals: those
who are under 35? 30? 25? Those who are older
than that and 'young' in the museum
profession? How young? What about those who are
young at heart and will never get 'old'?

The second thing would be to define what would be
the rights of those members. Will they all be student members?
This is not a simple question to solve: many
young professionals are already PhDs, while some
professionals older than 35 (or 40) will be still
getting their postgraduate degrees. That will
vary from country to country, from Region to
Region, according to local/regional systems of
education and educational opportunities.

This has already been mentioned by other
colleagues, some weeks ago, as well as the
difficulty in defining special rights.

Yet I think we must go on discussing this
matter. I am entirely in favour of the renovation of ICOM membership!
