I second the recommendation for Gary Cross' book Kid's Stuff.

Two others that are interesting:

1) Miriam Formanek Burnell's book, Made to Play House: Dolls and the
Commercialization of American Girlhood, 1830 - 1930.

2) Henry Jenkins' book, Barbie to Mortal Combat: Gender and Computer Games
