Additional comments on the subject:

Please be careful if you are storing alfalfa hay. It has a high nitrogen
content (about 16%) and when it has not been sufficiently dried before
baling, it has been known to heat through composting and smolder into a fire.

Although hay has little nutrition, it can be a food source, as shown by my
pet donkey, "Edward R. Burro" (and for those of you who don't understand
Spanish, "burro" means "donkey," as well as being a nice play on words
about journalist Edward R. Murrow, since I work in media). Donkeys are very
adaptable and will also eat tumbleweeds, but horses will sometimes chew
their straw bedding as a sign of boredom.

By the way, straw is nicely soft and smooth, so any "rolls in the hay" were
surely not done in dried alfalfa. And don't be suggestive about why I know
or I shall be forced to defend myself with my sharp hay fork or have Edward
R. bite you!
