I had sent my reply to Ann off list, but copy it here (with additions) for
those interested:

As British civil servants (although with locally negotiated arrangements
now) we currently get 28 days leave a year (rising to 33 after ten years
service for staff in post before 1 April 1998).  This is rather more
generous than most UK employers.

In addition, England has eight public holidays per year (New Year's day,
two at Xmas, two at Easter, May Day and Spring and Summer Bank Holidays).
Staff who work these days usually get paid the same overtime rate as for a
Sunday, generally double time.  Where a festival falls on a weekend (such
as Christmas and Boxing days this year) the Bank Holiday is on the next
weekday (27th and 28th December this year).  The UK also has an additional
Millenium Bank Holiday this year on the 31st, with the 3rd January as the
regular New Year Bank Holiday.

So this means that I, with fourteen years service at the Museum, get 41
weekdays off - just over eight weeks in total.
