TEXAS PARKS AND WILDLIFE DEPARTMENT
Warnock Environmental Education Center
Big Bend Ranch Complex, Lajitas, Texas
Curatorial Planning and Implementation Project

Exhibit Tech II (2 positions, temporary, contract)
$2036 per full-time month

*       Positions are available immediately and will be open until filled
*       Project must be completed no later than August 31, 2000
*       Work location:  Barton Warnock Environmental Education Center, Big
Bend Ranch Complex, Lajitas
*       Normal work hours: 40/week; six (6) full-time months total for both
positions
*       Will consider flexible and less than full-time hours; positions may
be combined
*       Project phase under supervision of the Chief Curator, Interpretation
& Exhibits Branch, Austin HQ.
*       Performs complex work under general supervision with moderate
latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment.

Project goals:
Position 1
*       Establish and implement open storage area in museum setting context
for Center's study collection (primarily herbarium, geological and
paleontological specimens and historical objects), including custom
installation of objects inside open storage cabinets and appropriate
documentation (labels, reference guides) for public use.  Assist ref
disposition of inappropriate collections.  Specific guidelines and tasks
will be issued.  (2 months)
Position 2
*       Establish and implement inhouse and outreach interpretative
educational programming utilizing the Center's collections for self-guided
and group tours and programs, including themes and guidelines, volunteer
docent group, traveling trunk, and so on. Specific guidelines and tasks will
be issued.  (4 months)

Experience and Education:
        Education: (1) Graduation from an accredited college or university
with a Bachelor's degree with course work in museum studies, history,
science, education, or a related field; (2) Master's degree from an
accredited college or university may be substituted for two years of the
required qualifying experience as listed in the Experience section below;
(3) One year of full-time qualifying experience as listed in the Experience
section below may be substituted for the required education at the rate of
one year of experience equals 30 semester hours with a maximum substitution
of 60 semesters hours for two years of college.
        Experience: Two years of experience in museum collection care,
interpretation, education, or museum administration.

Selection Criteria:
Demonstrated knowledge of principles and practices of museum administration
and interpretative educational programming, skill in personal computers,
ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing, ability to plan
and organize, ability to work well with Park employees and visitors, ability
to conduct work activities in accordance with Department's safety program,
knowledge of historical preservation and museum display and storage
techniques, working knowledge of botany, geology, paleontology and history
of the Trans-Peco region and the Chihuahuan Desert.  Bilingual English and
Spanish preferred.

Additional Notes:
The Barton Warnock Environmental Education Center is located in Lajitas in
the Big Bend area.  There is limited population and facilities.  No housing
is provided with this position.  More information about the Center may be
