Dear Ann - there is an Israeli artist called Agam (I think that's his last name, don't know if he uses a first name) who did (does?) "paintings" that read differently from different angles - almost like the effect of that ribbed plastic over an image.  I'm not sure if that's who
you're thinking of but check his work out either way.
