Edward P. Alexander. Museums in Motion: An Introduction to the History
and Functions of Museums. Nashville: AASLH, 1979. (A later, reprinted
version is also available)

Alexander explores the history and function of an array of museums
including art museums, history museums, natural history museums, science
museums, and botanical gardens.  The book, while focusing on museums in
the United States, contains numerous references to the role of museums in
other nations worldwide.
