'Well, here in the states it isn't quite that peachy but it aint bad for
guv'mint workers anyway.. so that makes a total of fifty days maximum
possible leave if you include sick days 37 if you don't'
Coming up to thanksgiving (although not for us in the UK, of course) this
has been quite an thanks-generating thread for me.
As a local government permanent employee with more than 2 years service, I
get
- 8 public holidays (paid)
- 2 statutory holidays (paid)
- 2 concessionary holidays (chosen by personnel and the unions) (paid)
- 21 days paid leave (to be taken at any time in consultation with my line
manager, three maximum to pass over each year)
- up to 8 weeks leave without pay for 'urgent and exceptional reasons'
- 3 days paid leave for study for a recognised examination
- 18 weeks with pay for maternity leave, 6 weeks at 9/10 pay and 12 weeks at
half pay (if I was a man I'd get 5 days paid paternity pay)
- 6 weeks paid leave to adopt a child
- 4 months paid sick leave, 4 months half pay sick leave (rise to a maximum
of 6 and 6 after 4 years)
- I don't get paid overtime, but do get to take time off in lieu for extra
hours worked (say on Saturday or evening private views).
Of course, the big problem is that permanent jobs are few and far between.
As a temporary employee on a 'casual' contract or a short-term contract I
would get considerably fewer of the above benefits and that's a big issue
for museum professionals here.
