Assessing the Impacts of Museums
John H. Falk, Ph.D.
Director
Institute for Learning Innovation
How effectively do museums and other free-choice learning institutions
accomplish their missions? What are the benefits that the millions of
people who visit museums annually derive from their experiences? To what
degree do museums actually facilitate changes in long-term learning,
attitudes and behavior? How successfully do the various research and
evaluation efforts undertaken by museums today answer these questions?
This seminar will review what we do know about learning in museums,
describe conceptually how to begin to think about meaningfully and
systematically assessing the impact of museums, and provide examples of
research that begins to more systemically and broadly measure that impact.
Dr. John H. Falk is known internationally for his research on free-choice
learning. He has authored over sixty scholarly articles in the areas of
learning, biology and education as well as numerous educational materials
and books. Recent books include Leisure Decisions Influencing African
American Use of Museums (1993), Bubble Monster and other science fun
(1996), Bite-Sized Science (1999) and Free-Choice Learning: Assessing the
science education infrastructure (in press); books with Dr. Lynn Dierking
include The Museum Experience (1992), Collaboration: Critical Criteria for
Success (1997); Public Institutions for Personal Learning: Establishing a
Research Agenda (1995) and Museums and Learning: How People Learn When They
Don?t Have To (in press). Before founding and directing the Institute for
Learning Innovation, Dr. Falk worked at the Smithsonian Institution for
fourteen years where he held a number of senior positions. Falk received
doctorates in Biology and Education from the University of California at
Berkeley. He also earned a masters degree and bachelors degree in Zoology
and a secondary teaching credential in biology and chemistry from the same
institution.
