from what i know, the BMA gets a third of its operating budget from federal and state funding, so its withdrawal would represent a significant decrease in the operations

and as far as how "bad" some of the pieces are, there is a lot of info on the web on artists like Chris Ofili, the Chapman brothers (Dinos and Jack) and everyone's favorite formaldehyde funster, Damien Hirst

a bulk of the controversy surrounds Ofili's "Virgin Mary" because of its incorporation/use of elephant dung...the combination of subject(mary) and media(dried elephant feces) has the church all up in arms and breathing down Giuliani's neck to do something

some would say for no good reason, but others would whole-heartedly agree

i personally have not decided where i stand on the matter, but i must say that Jennifer Carlquist's point is a good one, one that i hadn't previously considered

i'm just interested to see what happens
