ALUTIIQ MUSEUM CURATOR/DEPUTY DIRECTOR TO ATTEND TRAINING

Amy Steffian, Curator and Deputy Director of the Alutiiq Museum has been
awarded a

stipend to attend the 1999 AASLH (American Association for State and
Local History)

annual meeting and a special symposium for representatives of American
Indian

Museums in Baltimore, MD.

The symposium’s primary focus will be fund raising for tribal museums.
Some of

the topics to be discussed will be The Economics of Repatriation,
Federal Funding for

Tribal Museums and Cultural Centers, and National Trends for Funding
Native

Programs. Symposium speakers will include Walter Echohawk, Native
American

Rights Fund and primary architect of NAGPRA legislation, and John
Meredith of the

National Endowment for the Humanities. “I’m very excited about this
opportunity

and the chance to learn how other Native Museums are funding their
programs”, says

Steffian.

Participants will also receive a private tour of the new storage
facilities for the National

Museum of the American Indian, which is moving its head quarters from
New York to

the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C.

The Alutiiq Museum is supported by the following Native organizations:
Afognak Native

Corporation, Akhiok-Kaguyak, KANA, Koniag, Leisnoi, Natives of Kodiak,

and Old Harbor. The Alutiiq Museum and Archaeological Repository is
located at 215

Mission Rd, Ste. 101. Tel: 486-7004. Hours of operation are: Mon-Fri,
