cf. also "incubus", which has since become a medical/psychological term for a
specific form of nightmare accompanied by the feeling of a crushing weight
inhibiting respiration.

I recall the image, thought not the artist's name, of a 19th century painting
or engraving showing an incubus crouching on a sleeping victim's chest. One
of the symbolists? romantics?
