PLEASE EXCUSE CROSS-POSTINGS...
My institution is currently planning the development of curriculum units and
outreach programs for 3rd, 8th, and 11th grade students and teachers. Our
Education Advisory Committee--made up of curriculum coordinators, teachers,
school administrators, and museum staff--concur that there is a definite
need to make these programs accessible to as many students as possible,
including those with limited proficiency in English (which is 30.1% of the
students in our county). Therefore, we would like to have sections (if not
all) of our programs and products be bilingual, in Spanish and English. I
will be meeting with specialists in bilingual education about this process
but the committee would also like to learn about similar programs in other
museums. Some of our questions are:
+ Are there model programs that we can learn from?
+ Which pieces/sections should be translated into Spanish?
+ Do we translate them into Spanish after the programs have been developed
and evaluated OR create the Spanish sections concurrently?
+ Are there potential funders for the translation of these materials into
Spanish?
I welcome any feedback anyone has about these questions and am anxious to
hear about similar bilingual school programs. Please feel free to reply to
this email or contact me via telephone at (831) 775-4730. Thank you for your
time.
