Actually, John and I are sharing filtering of messages posted from the
newsgroup version of museum-l.
Your account with museum-l is HIGHLY customizable, either by following the
instructions included
in the FAQ and on the INFO card available from Lsoft or by visiting the
listserv's home page at
http://home.ease.lsoft.com/archives/museum-l.html and changing your account
setting.
(note that you will have to establish a password to access the account
information).
things you can alter include
Setting the SUBJECT of the message to begin with ISEN
Temporarily suspending your email.
Turning off self-acknowledgements.
Restarting your email.
Changing the account to DIGEST mode and back
And several others.
Happy altering!

Subject: Re: replying to the list
Peter:
Unfortunately this is necessary because of the need to have the List
totally over-run with commercial (or worse) material - something that
would happen within days if it became known as an easy touch.
The alternative - which is used on e.g. ICOM-L or my own CHDEV-L (Cultural
Heritage and Development ) is to have a List Manager authorising each
posting - something that John Chadwick used to do on Museum-L also, until
this became too much of a burden.
At least with the present arrangement the chances of some spammer posting
something offensive under your name is markedly reduced.
I think that it is possible to set the LISTSERV software to eliminate the
notification of successful distribution (see the MUSEUM-L FAQ file that we
are all periodically asked to save for reference), but I find this quite
useful as sometimes postings do get lost en route for various reasons.
