There seems to be an unintended misunderstanding about what constitutes a
noncollecting museum, in terms of display. I've been noticing a stereotype
developing of the noncollecting museum as a technopalace of gadgets, widgets,
and bright lights. This depiction is inaccurate.
I'm afraid if we engage in this stereotyping, we'll miss something
evolving in the museum field that could help all museums move one step closer
to being more effective partners with their communities.
Although there may be exceptions (there always are), I've yet to experience
a noncollecting museum that fits the stereotype. Most have fairly traditional
message-based exhibitions. The only difference is that they don't collect.
I've seen little difference in style of presentation taking place.
