Sometimes you can over come space restrictions through the use of mirrors.
Reflecting the image can allow more creative placement of the lighting unit.
I would suggest contacting a theatrical lighting designer they solve these
kind of problems all the time.

near the ceiling with an incandescent light directly above it.  There was an
electronic stirrer of some kind that agitated the water and created a nice
