Our HR department does not have the time to go sifting through lists
reading resumes to fill a position.

We post our openinings on our website, on museum-l, on selected other sites
and lists as appropriate, and advertise in local newspapers and selected
other publications as appropriate. I have heard our HR manager say that
more than 50% of hires in the last year came through the Internet. (Note:
We accept and encourage applications via email - ascii text only.) And,
yes, we do have staff who first saw a Tech job posting on Museum-L.

RE: volunteering

I began volunteering at The Tech about a year before I started working
here. I had already been in the field 12 years. In looking at where I
wanted to go, I decided I needed experience in fundraising. My job at the
time involved lots of weekend work. After discussing my interests and
schedule with the Director of Development here, we settled on a project of
prospect research. For the most part, I did my work offsite at various
libraries. When a grants coordinator position opened on staff, they were
delighted to hire me. Many other staff here at The Tech also started here
as volunteers. (Our Vice President, Gallery Operations was a volunteer for
about 10 years before joining the staff!)

Each museums is different. I *know* that volunteering can help you get a
job. If that is your only reason for volunteering, just be sure to ask
about the possibilities when you join up.

P.S. If you are really interested in exploring this subject in depth,
please check the Museum-L archives
<http://home.dc.lsoft.com/archives/museum-l.html>. There are extensive
postings on this subject *every* year.
