The publication Pat refers to is:

"Second Lives: A Survey of Archetectural Artifact Collections in the United States" by Emogene A. Bevitt, published by Preservation Assistance Division, National Park Service, US Department of the Interior, 1994. ISBN 0-16-045205-8.

It list 170 collections of which 54% have one or more objects on display (according to the introduction).

There was also a special issue of "CRM" the National Park Service magazine in 1993 which had articles about the curatorial/educational aspects of architectural fragments.
