Well, this is a "droit moral" or "droit de suite" question (and the
subject of case study problems in museum studies courses). For guidance I
usually go to my trusty copy of Marie Malaro's A Legal Primer on managing
Museum Collections, thence to one or more codes of ethics, thence to the
needs and policies of my institution and its audience. Considering all
these helps in decision making--in general and on a case-by-case basis.
