"traffic report" ASSISTANT EDITOR

JOB OVERVIEW
18th Street seeks someone to work with the editor of the traffic report,
18th Street's annual publication.  The Assistant to the Editor will work
with 18th Street staff, and the editors on all aspects of the traffic
report, including the post-production aspects of the 1998/99 issue and the
planning phases of the 99/00 issue.  With the 1998/99 issue the intern will
be given the opportunity to work with the editors on magazine distribution,
planning readings, and researching appropriate new artistic venues for the
work.  In addition s/he will work on the planning process, creative
structuring of the magazine, and the selection process for writers and
artists for the 99/00 issue.

DUTIES
The Intern will be asked to work directly with the 1998/99 issue artists
and writers to plan and prepare a Featured Artist reading.  The intern will
research venues for submitting selections from the 98/99 issue to literary
journals and competitions as well as the visual and graphic competition
equivalents.  As assistant to the editor, s/he will also work on the
upcoming 1999/00 issue creating a workplan and timeline for the issue,
schedule and participate in initial planning meetings and assist the
editors with the designer and artist/writer selection processes.  In
addition, the intern will be asked to coordinate meeting materials,
maintain files and to sit in on meetings and take notes.

INTERNATIONAL PROGRAM AND CURATORIAL ASSISTANT

JOB OVERVIEW
18th Street Arts Complex seeks an intern to assist the Director of the
International Artist-in- Residence Exchange Program.  The intern will act
as a host to one or two artists visiting from Australia, England, France,
Ireland, Northern Ireland, Sweden, Japan, Nigeria, or Cameroon and will be
responsible for introducing them to the L.A. arts and culture scene and
facilitating their negotiations of Los Angeles.  In addition the intern
will be expected to assist with the coordination of events for the artists
(readings, artist lectures, slide presentations, etc....), and
correspondence with foreign arts agencies.  In addition, the intern will
work with the Works on Paper Gallery Curator to assist in all facets of
gallery operation, including installation, promotion  artist research and
special events.

DUTIES
International Artist In Residence Exchange Program
The Intern will host visiting artists, including introducing them to local
cultural sites and events and provide technical support for L.A. artists
who have gone abroad.  S/he will also assist with coordination of artist
events including slide presentations and lectures in area primary and
secondary schools and local colleges and universities.  The intern will
assist visiting artists with all aspects of any exhibitions that they have
while in residence including program and space scheduling, press release
writing, invitation/announcement designing, mailing, and event preparation.
As part of the internship the assistant will aid with publicity and
correspondence with regional and foreign arts agencies, consulates,
departments of culture, and maintain artist files and documentation.

Works on Paper Gallery
The other component of this internship includes assisting with all aspects
of 18th Street's Gallery including the curating of art exhibits,
researching artists, soliciting materials and preparing information for
exhibition selection.  The intern will also work in all facets of gallery
operation, including installation, promotion (designing and mailing
announcement cards), and special events.

REQUIREMENTS
Internship opportunities are available for members of groups
underrepresented in the professions related to museums and the visual arts:
individuals of African American, Asian, Latino/Hispanic, Native American,
and Pacific Islander descent.  To apply, candidates (1) must be currently
enrolled as an undergraduate and have completed at least one semester of
college by June 1999, (2) will not graduate before December, 1999, (3) must
be a resident of or attending college in the Los Angeles area.

INFORMATION ABOUT THE ORGANIZATION
18th Street Arts Complex is a non-profit arts center, supporting artists
and arts organizations dedicated to issues of community and diversity in
contemporary society.  18th Street maintains four programs that reflect its
mission as an incubator/learning center through the arts: a Residency
Program for emerging Los Angeles artists, an International
Artist-in-Residence Exchange Program, public events and programming, and
Arts Education programs for youths in our surrounding communities.  Our
support services seek to enable emerging artists and arts organizations to
reach their professional goals.  Housed in a complex of five buildings in
Santa Monica, we've been the home base for some of the most experimental
and innovative art being made in the United States today.  Many of the
artists and groups who have worked at 18th Street have gone on to national
and international acclaim.
