Andrew W. Mellon Internship in Conservation
at The Huntington Library

Working under the supervision of the Head Conservator for Works on Paper, Photographs, and Illuminated Manuscripts, the Mellon Intern will address the conservation of a variety of library and museum materials.  These materials may include drawings, prints, manuscripts, and documents.  Through training in materials analysis, conservation treatment techniques, and readings from the conservation literature, the intern will advance their own understanding of the underlying principals of conservation and the tools and techniques used in the conservation of paper-based collections materials.  

The primary focus of the internship will be on the practical application of learned conservation treatment skills.  We will look closely at the actual practice of various treatment techniques and the circumstances under which each technique is appropriate.  The intern will work cooperatively with the department's Paper Conservators who will provide instruction in the treatment of Huntington collections materials.  Paper conservation treatments, materials, and strategies will be addressed.

At the conclusion of the internship, the intern may present the Preservation Department with a brief written report or presentation about their experience.

Term:   May, June 1999

Award:  $5000.00

Commitment:      At the end of the internship period, the intern will be expected to consider seeking out further education in the field or a library/museum position in which the skills and understanding acquired at the Huntington can be put to use in developing, administering, or executing conservation projects.

Qualifications:   A four year college degree in Art, Art History, Chemistry, English, History, or Journalism, or a Master's degree in Library Science or Art History.  Letters of recommendation from 3 persons acquainted with the applicant's academic or professional achievements.  Capability of being bonded.  Candidates possessed of manual dexterity and detail orientation are preferred.
