Vision and Background

The Robert Noyce Center for Learning has been established so that The Tech
Museum of Innovation can assist teachers and parents in their efforts to
increase student interest and achievement in science disciplines. Drawing
upon the interactive exhibitry and programming of The Tech and its
corporate and education partners, the Center will give special emphasis to
the effective utilization of technology in teaching and learning. The
Center will develop programs that reflect the unique role and resources The
Tech Museum can offer to area educators. The Center also is collaborating
with area schools to nurture their promising initiatives in science
learning where Tech Museum resources can offer significant added value.


Overview

The Executive Director of the Noyce Center for Learning, reports to the CEO
and also serves as Vice President, Education, with lead responsibility for
developing and delivering the teacher professional development programs of
the Center. The Center director is a member of the Tech's program
leadership team, which includes the Vice Presidents, Exhibits, Programs,
and Gallery Operations. In this capacity, the Executive Director of the
Noyce Center will contribute to the planning and development of all
education-related programs at The Tech. Please reference the attached
chart, which depicts the continuum of educational activities at The Tech
and their relationship to Noyce Center programs. The Center Director will
work closely and collaboratively with the CEO and the appropriate
committees of the governing board of The Tech in the development and
approval of budgets and multi-year plans. A distinguished advisory council,
to be formed under the initiative and leadership of the Center director,
will ensure that Center plans benefit from the thinking and research of
leaders in teacher development and science education.

Responsibilities

The Executive Director of the Noyce Center for Learning will:

*Provide educational policy leadership to The Tech and oversee the
management of The Noyce Center at The Tech Museum of Innovation.
*Plan and implement teacher professional development programs that advance
the mission of The Tech and the Noyce Center for Learning.
*Develop an annual and multi-year budget, as part of the overall Tech
budget for Board approval, to achieve Center objectives.
*Recruit, develop and manage a staff capable of achieving Center objectives.
*Identify and exploit promising initiatives in area schools where Center and
Tech participation can significantly increase the probability of success,
defined as:
   -Evidence of more teachers teaching more science that is hands on,
inquiry based.
   -Improved student test scores on all state-required science tests.
*Participate in the Leadership Team that develops and implements programs
and oversees the daily management of the museum.
*Work closely with Tech Development staff, directors and others to secure
adequate external resources to fund Center priorities.
*Evaluate and report on effectiveness of Noyce Center initiatives and
progress of school/Center partnerships in achieving mutual objectives.


Expected Results

By the end of year 1, the leadership of the Director should result in:

-A distinctive program and focus for Noyce Center initiatives.
-A budget for planned Noyce Center initiatives and programs.
-A funding plan that sets goals and identifies potential sources for
funding necessary to achieve Noyce Center objectives.
- A clearly articulated agenda for the Noyce Center that reflects the
advice of a distinguished advisory council and demonstrated, growing local
support and acceptance.
-A process for evaluating the progress and success of Center activities.
-A core staff capable of implementing approved programs.
-Recognition among area educators of the commitment of the Center to
quality programming directed at teachers, schools, and parents on behalf of
the students.
-Recognition among area educators of the commitment of the Center to
quality programming, on behalf of students, directed at teachers, schools
and parents as evidenced by growing numbers of schools and teachers
participating in Center-sponsored programs.
-Positive results from pilot collaborations currently being developed with
area schools committed to goals that are aligned with the Center's mission;
further, a model for expanding these collaborations to support other
school-led efforts with high potential for success (as measured by #5 under
Responsibilities).
-Explicit integration of Center plans and activities with those for the
entire Tech Museum.


Qualifications:

Management:
-Highly skilled in executing the major components of a senior management
position as measured by effectiveness of programs, a growing customer base,
and sound financial performance.
-Significant achievement in making complex projects or operations
successful in quality, fiscal soundness and timeliness. Experience in a
start-up, and/or organization-in-transition a plus.
-Experience managing an educational center. Understanding of the
development of educational content in a museum environment.
-Success with delivering existing commitments to the community and
corporate sponsors.
-Must possess excellent judgment and a high degree of urgency and
follow-through.
-Must be deeply passionate about and committed to reform and improvement in
the schools in the Silicon Valley region and the importance of student
interest in and achievement in science and related disciplines.
-A visionary leader, an inspiring motivator, an effective planner and
implementer, a good organizer, and a team manager with a keen judgment of
the abilities of others.
-Recognizes the potential of appropriate technology to enhance teaching and
learning.
-Possesses highly developed people skills and is willing and able to work in
 a team setting to delegate tasks appropriately.
-Creative, able to lead and develop a diverse and independent group of
employees. Friendly, good sense of humor, fair and collaborative. A coach
who is bottom line/measurement driven, with a demonstrated commitment to
customer service.
-A skillful collaborator and coalition builder who leverages the limited
tangible and enormous intangible resources of The Tech and the Center for
Learning through productive, high performing relationships with diverse
constituencies.
-Must be committed to the vision and educational mission of The Tech.
-Must possess the skills and experience to realize the vision for the
Center for Learning while giving attention to detail, quality and ability
to build organizational capacity to engage Bay Area educators in science
teaching improvements and the effective uses of technology.


Experience and Education:
-Significant experience in fields of teaching and learning in science and
related disciplines.
-Minimum of a master's degree in education, science or engineering.
-Classroom experience and teaching credential a plus.
-Significant policy and leadership experience in the not for profit or,
private sectors.

Salary:  Commensurate with experience
