Dear Ceres Bainbridge:

You may wish to get in touch with the DakshinaChitra a heritage center in
the Coromandel Coast area of Southern India. The center (which is made up
of a set of pavilions) itself seems to have been built only recently but
using traditional methods. I get the impression from your description of
what you hope to do that you will be working with a network of heritage
buildings scattered over a large area. Nevertheless, I think the Center is
engaged in programs that hope to assist in the preservation of both the
architectural and crafts heritage of their area.

I also recall from a conversation with one of the women from the center
that the country that she had visited with a lot of heritage centers is
Romania. I'm afraid though that I wouldn't know how you could obtain
addresses etc. Perhaps thru the internet or thru the UNESCO e-mail?

Address of DakshinaChitra is :

c/o Madras Craft Foundation,
G-3, 6 Urur Oclott Road, Besant Nagar, Chenai 600 090, India

Tel/fax : 091 -44 - 4918943

Note: their e-mail servers are always on the blink.

Good Luck.

Victorino M. Manalo,
Philippines.
