A new CEN/ISSS workshop entitled Cultural Heritage On-line (CHOL) was
formally established at a kick-off meeting held during the EVA
Conference in Cambridge on 27 July 1998. mda is pleased to announce
that Matthew Stiff (mda) was appointed as Chair and Katherine Futers
(mda) as Secretary (on behalf of the British Standards Institute).
Chris Makemson (CMC) will act as Editor.

The project is one of the Workshops for the Information Society
developed by CEN/ISSS (Information Society Standardisation System).
The CHOL workshop aims to promote and endorse standards and best
practice in cultural information management, identify the gaps and
develop future projects to address them. Further details are available
on the CEN website at
http://www.cenorm.be/isss/Workshop/CHOL/welcome.html

mda will be ensuring that there is wide consultation of both users and
suppliers of technology and invite you to attend a fringe meeting to
be held at the mda conference, The Cultural Grid: Content &
Connections at 3.00pm on Thursday 10 September in Manchester. This
meeting will address the potential workplan for the workshop which
will eventually be expressed in a CEN Workshop Agreement (CWA). The
following areas have been raised as potential topics for inclusion: 7

Thesauri 7 Digitisation 7 Intellectual Property Rights 7 Access
Control 7 Composite Data Structures 7 Metadata 7 Guides to Best
Practice (relating to some or all of the above)

Participants are invited to contact the CHOL Secretariat if they wish
to make a brief presentation (no more than 5 minutes) proposing a
topic for inclusion in the work programme.

CEN/ISSS workshops are open to all participants, so please forward
this invitation to others to whom it may be of interest. To help gauge
numbers, please could you contact Katherine Futers at mda if you plan
to attend ([log in to unmask]).

It is possible to participate in CHOL even if you are unable to
attend the Manchester meeting since most work will be carried out
electronically. If you are interested in registering your interest in
the workshop but are unable to attend the meeting, please complete the
form on the CEN website at
