Archivists are trained to handle written and photographic materials, as well as audio and video tapes.  Your division of labor seems logical to us as well.  It would be best to contact Dr. David Gracy II at the UT-Austin Graduate School of Library Science at 512-471-3821.  He is the head of Archival Enterprise and is the best qualified to answer your questions.
