The Stanford University Museum of Art-which will reopen in January 1999 as
the Iris & B. Gerald Cantor Center for Visual Arts at Stanford
University-was founded by Jane and Leland Stanford (as the the Leland
Stanford Junior Museum) as part of the university the couple established,
but the museum itself was really Jane's instititution.  For all practical
purposes, she served as its first director until her death in 1905.
