Emily, The registrar whom I routinely ask these questions recommended Liquid Label from Light Impressions.  It is hemically stable and can be removed with acetone if necessary. To this point I have had no problems with it.  It is certainly easy to use and I am planning to train volunteers to help with the object marking.
