" I got a letter back informing me that all volunteers
at the museum worked in the gift shop or at the
     reception desk."

Seems an odd response to me. Your local museum must
not use volunteers behind the scenes, or do they just
     start everyone in the store?

We ask volunteers where they'd like to work, in
addition to inquiring about skills, training and
ability. If someone WANTS to work in collections or
exhibits, we train and supervise them. We require
volunteers to undergo regular training and orientation
to stay with us. Some volunteers change their areas
when they tire of one job - we have lots of things they
     can do!

     Keep trying, you'll make it.
