My understanding is that stipends awarded through a university (like a grad
stipend) for tuition, books, fees, etc. are not taxable.  However, it seems that
stipends for living expenses are taxable.  My guess is that your stipend is
probably taxable.  I found this webpage regarding the taxing of stipends, so it
might be helpful.
