JOB DESCRIPTION
Full Time (May include Saturdays and some Thursday evenings)
 
JOB TITLE:  Manager, Teacher Resources     DATE: July, 1998

DEPARTMENT:  Teacher Resources

DIVISION:  Education

ACCOUNTABLE TO:  Chair, Education Division

JOB PURPOSE:  Develops policies and procedures to manage Teacher Resources, consisting of the creation of circulating materials and their distribution; the development of on-line educational materials; year-round teacher and school volunteer training, and school / museum collaborations, ensuring that they support the educational objectives of the Education Division and the mission of The Minneapolis Institute of Arts.

MAJOR JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:

(30%) 1.* Coordinates and provides continuing education opportunities for educators.
  · Develops and conducts two educator summer institutes and 6 to 8 school-year workshops that enable educators to incorporate the museum's permanent collection and special exhibitions into their curricula; duties include recruiting participants, publicizing, and developing class materials
· Coordinates educator workshops led by docents

(30%) 2.* With Interactive Media and other departments, develops and produces printed and 
 on-line curriculum materials based on the Institute's collections
  · Researches and writes slide sets for all grade levels
· Researches and writes material for web-based study units for all grade levels
· Works with interactive media producers to locate or develop visual resources for on-line programs

(12%) 3.* With the Education Chair, establishes Teacher Resources department priorities and
 long-range plans in a manner that meets the community's and the region's needs.
  · Develops and manages budgets
· Identifies new ways to service the needs of classroom teachers with printed and on-line materials and incorporates new topics into these materials
· Assesses changing school and educator needs for materials, training, and other resources and plans accordingly
· Keeps abreast of all information regarding the collection and special exhibitions
· With other museum departments, helps determine program goals and project deadlines
· Holds regularly scheduled meetings with teacher advisory committee
· Visits schools to assess needs and promote services of the MIA
· Keeps abreast of educational trends and training methodology and ensures that current philosophies are incorporated into MIA programming

(10%) 4.* Supervises directly Teacher Resources staff
  · Makes decisions and recommendations relating to selection, promotion, pay and discipline
· Provides ongoing communication through generation and dissemination of information and training and performance communication reviews.

(8%) 5.* Coordinates annual Educators' Evening

(8%) 6.* Develops methods to assess effectiveness of current programs and materials, and to
 target future audiences.

(2%) 7. Performs other duties and responsibilities as required or assigned.

*NOTE:  Job responsibilities are ranked in order of importance.  Those marked with asterisks are considered essential to the position.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Education:  Masters degree in art education with at least 12 graduate credits in art history, or Masters degree in art history with at least 16 credits in Education; current Minnesota Teacher Certificate (license to teach).

Skills/Experience:  1) Demonstration of successful curriculum writing; 2) Teaching experience; 3) Some management experience, including hiring, supervising staff, budget preparation and program evaluation.

RESPONSIBILITY FOR WORK OF OTHERS:  Directly supervises the Curriculum Materials Specialist and Curriculum Materials Clerk.  Indirectly supervises the Administrative Assistant.
