                           POSITION DESCRIPTION TITLE: Director of Exhibitions and Artist Services, Indianapolis Art Center LINE OF AUTHORITY: Reports to the Executive Director; program activities                     coordinated through the Program Team SUPERVISES: Exhibitions Associate (FT)                Gallery Technician (PT) (1999?)                Artist Resource Coordinator (PT) (2000?) AREAS OF WORK: General Description: In concert with the Executive Director and Associate Director for Programs, responsible for the overall artistic vision of the exhibitions program. Ensures quality and professionalism of gallery exhibitions and services for working artists at the Indianapolis Art Center. Interfaces with the community on issues of contemporary art appreciation. Specific Duties:   Performs activities related to the daily operations of a contemporary art gallery   and consistent with AAM-accreditation mandated levels of professionalism.      a) Selects themes and artists for exhibition based on criteria outlined in the           Exhibitions Philosophy, IAC Mission Statement, and the Education           Philosophy and in partnership with the Associate Director for Programs           and the Program Team.      b) Chooses objects for exhibition in accordance with the educational goals           of the exhibition.      c) Researches and writes appropriate interpretive materials for exhibitions      d) Performs or provides for interpretation of exhibitions      e) Supervises the installation and deinstallation of exhibitions and the           handling of artworks      f) Evaluates exhibitions and exhibition-related activities.    Performs activities related to the long-term maintenance and development of a   temporary exhibition facility.      a) Ensures maintenance of AAM-mandated light, temperature, and humidity           conditions      b) Keeps abreast of trends and requirements for exhibiting and storing           contemporary art.    Provides input on controlling the quality of objects sold in the Gallery Gift Shop.    Performs activities related to budgeting and fundraising for department.      a) Prepares and defends an annual budget appropriate for operational needs      b) Monitors financial activity of department      c) Prepares and defends requests for special funding      d) Prepares applications for outside funding      e) Performs other financial duties as requested    Performs activities related to ongoing programming for the special needs of working   artists      a) Develops, implements, and evaluates special programming based on      expressed or perceived needs of artist community      b) Works with other Art Center staff members to ensure that Art Center           operations and policies consider and are sensitive to the needs of working           artists      c) Acts as Artist Coordinator for the annual Broad Ripple Art Fair    Acts as academic and professional liaison between the fields of museology and art history and the Indianapolis Art Center      a) Attends appropriate seminars, conferences, and professional development           opportunities      b) Conducts community and professional activities consistent with the           promotion of the discipline of the art center as a subset of the museum           field      c) Represents the Art Center at appropriate public forums      d) Performs professional services such as grant reviews, program consultation,           exhibition jurying and other activities to smaller organizations free of charge    Organizes and supervises use of slide/resume/videodisc bank of regional artists,   videotape library, etc. (until hiring of part-time Resource Coordinator)    Through Exhibitions Associate, works with students and faculty to provide professional  assistance for their corridor exhibitions    Oversees the Art Center's small permanent collection of art works    Responsible for the development and promotion of the Sculpture Garden as an   ongoing Art Center program area    Makes appropriate studio and exhibition visits and maintains contacts with artist   community in the region    Offers classes in contemporary art history and appreciation, and in the business of art. QUALIFICATIONS: Required: M.A. in Art History or M.F.A. in a visual art discipline Three to five years of gallery management experience, or the equivalent education Excellent speaking and writing skills Preferred: PhD. (ABD OK) in Art History with concentration in Contemporary Art Prior art history/art appreciation teaching experience Federal, state, and local grantwriting experience Fundraising experience
