Our museum receives essentially a token amount from our
city--$3,000/year.  Several years ago we used to receive <gasp!>
*double* that amount.  Our budget is just over $250,000.  We are a
private museum in a town with a year-round population of 3,500 but
tourist visitation near 1 million.

I'd be interested in seeing the responses you get (any not posted to the
list).  I've long thought that we should be working on increasing their
donation and more statistics would be helpful for us as well.
