SENIOR RESEARCHER/EVALUATOR


The Exploratorium is a museum dedicated to public understanding of science,
art, and human perception.  Founded in 1969 by Frank Oppenheimer, it has
pioneered the role of museums as active teaching centers with original
exhibitry and innovative programming based on an interactive approach to
learning.  It serves as an interdisciplinary resource for schools,
universities, scientists, and artists as well as the public.

SUMMARY
This position oversees in-house evaluation and research efforts for various
exhibit development projects and museum programs.  Responsibilities include
designing and implementing in-house research and evaluation projects,
coordinating activities directly with project teams and outside evaluators
and consultants, and training and oversight of staff and volunteer
evaluators.  The position reports to the Director of Visitor Research and
Evaluation.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
· Design, oversee, and implement, where appropriate, the in-house
evaluation plan for designated projects and programs, including front-end,
formative and remedial evaluation
· Where appropriate, act as principal liaison between the Exploratorium and
outside project evaluation consultants
· Train and coordinate volunteers and staff who perform evaluations
· Oversee the documentation of, and where appropriate, document project
process and results, including the creation of written reports
· Work with project leadership to develop project evaluation goals;
represent evaluation results in discussions of project direction
· As assigned, design and implement research projects.
· Present research and evaluation findings at conferences and other
professional meetings, as requested

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
· Advanced degree in science, education, or related field
· 3-5 years experience in evaluation and research, preferably in museum or
educational environments
· Demonstrated experience working collaboratively or leading project teams
· Excellent communications skills
· Excellent analytical abilities
· Demonstrated writing skills, preferably in published form

HOW TO APPLY:  This is a half-time (18.75 hr/week), exempt, management
position beginning in June 1998.  Starting salary is $394.31/week or
$20,504/year based on half-time schedule.  The position includes benefits.
