CURATOR of EDUCATION


CRANBROOK ART MUSEUM

Cranbrook Art Museum is a small but rapidly growing contemporary art museum
affiliated with Cranbrook Educational Community, including Cranbrook
Academy of
Art, and is recognized internationally for its education programs,
architecture, grounds and sculpture.

The Curator of Education is responsible for conceiving and implementing
creative education and outreach programs, including some aspects of public
relations, related to temporary exhibitions, collections and Cranbrook’s
architecture, with the goal of attracting, engaging and progressively
educating
diverse audiences, including school children, families, graduate art students
and informed adults. Works closely as a team with director, associate curator
of exhibitions, tour coordinator, collections intern, and volunteer docents.

The Art Museum’s collections, including the restored 1930 Saarinen House,
emphasize 20th-century arts, crafts, architecture and design, in particular
work by Academy faculty and graduates.  Temporary exhibitions (approximately
12-15 each year) explore the leading edge of the visual arts.

Ideal candidate will have an M.A. in art history, museum studies or education
and broad knowledge of 20th-century and contemporary art, including the
decorative arts and design; minimum five years professional museum experience,
including at least three in museum education; outgoing personality; excellent
speaking and writing skills, including editing; computer knowledge; and desire
to work collaboratively in a dynamic and  evolving environment.  Salary mid
$30k; excellent benefits.  Starts Fall 1998.  Applications reviewed until
