National Grid for Learning:
Survey of Education and IT Projects in Planning and Development

What is the survey for?
To find out what museum resources might be available for the National
Grid for Learning - of use in formal and informal education. We are
hoping to find about work you are currently planning, and also existing
materials that could be digitised and made available on-line.

What is the National Grid for Learning?
The National Grid for Learning (NGfL) is a Government initiative to
enable the use of the Internet for education, both in the sense of
formal curriculum-based learning and informal life-long learning. There
are three major strands:-
*networks - connecting libraries, schools and hospitals
                to the internet
*training - #20million from the New Opportunites Fund
of the National Lottery will be directed to train
teachers and librarians in using new technologies
*content - #50million from the New Opportunites Fund of the
National Lottery will be directed to creating education
                resources

Where do museums fit?
Museums and Galleries are seen as key providers of content for the NGfL.
They hold many unique resources, and also have expertise in their
interpretation to a wide range of audiences. Some museums and galleries
may also be able to liase with libraries to maximise the potential
offered by this initiative.

Why another survey
The Library and Information Commission have been tasked to advise the
New Opportunities Fund on the establishment of a national public digital
network. In order to establish priorities, it is essential to identify
existing resources. This survey forms part of that process. An initial
report is being prepared on the range of resources currently available
on the Internet produced by UK museums, but the aim of this survey is to
identify significant on-line resources that are currently being planned
or developed, and other digital resources that could be made available
on-line.

Why are we sending the survey to members of GEM?
The survey clearly needs to focus on the resources being developed for
educational use. GEM members will be involved in such projects.

Why do we need replies so soon?
In order for responses to be incorporated into the report, we must have
your replies by Monday 6th July. This enables the research to be
completed in order for funding to start in 1999.

Why is the MDA involved?
From 1 April 1998, the remit of the MDA was extended by the Museums and
Galleries Commission to include helping museums and galleries make
effective use of new technologies in managing information about their
collections.

How can you send us the information?
By post to:- NGfL Survey, MDA, Jupiter House, Station Road,
Cambridge, CB1 2JD
By fax to:- 01223 362521
By email to:- [log in to unmask]

Thank you
