A National Historic Site is a property managed as a part of the National
Park Service.  A National Historic Landmark is a property designated as such
by the Secretary of the Interior because of its national significance.  NHLs
may be public or private property.  Other historic sites may be listed in
the National Register of Historic Places because of their national, state,
or local significance.  Your State Historic Preservation Officer, nearby
National Park Service office, or the National Park Service in Washington,
D.C. can provide you with literature that explains these distinctions in
detail.  You can also look at the NPS's web pages.
