The Corpus Christi Museum of Science and History invites applicants for the
position of staff archeologist. Responsibilities include developing and
supervising field excavations, caring for archeology collections,
presenting public programs, and teaching courses at Texas A & M University
- Corpus Christi as an adjunct faculty member.
Research focus is anticipated to be (16th, 17th, and 18th century)
European, mostly Spanish and French, settlement in South Texas. The Museum
is designated the marine archeology repository by the State of Texas.
Important holdings include the 1554 Spanish shipwreck collection.
Acquisition of La Salle’s La Belle collection is being pursued. Ongoing
work includes the conservation of marine artifacts. Collections include
materials from regional Native American sites and some central American
indigenous cultural material.
Applicants should have a Doctor of Philosophy degree in anthropology, or
other directly related field, and a minimum of five years experience in a
museum or comparable facility and/or five years teaching experience at the
college or university level; or any equivalent combination of training,
education and experience. Some marine archeology experience preferred.
Must be able to pass underwater scuba training/certification. Desirable
skills and experience include supervision of field projects, experience in
Spanish colonial material culture, proficiency in Spanish language (written
and spoken), knowledge of chemistry, knowledge of artifact conservation
techniques.
The Museum is a department of the City of Corpus Christi. Salary range:
$2,547 - 3,581 monthly. Please submit resume and proof of highest
