Again, and always with apologies to non-U.S. list members:

The U.S. House of Representatives did not approve Title I of HR 3485,
which would have required nonprofits to gain prior approval from their
memberships before embarking on any "political activities," including
"educating any individual about any candidate, legislation, law, or
regulation."

In fact, the outrage from the nonprofit community was so enormous that
they stripped Title I from the bill before bringing it to the floor for
a vote.  (Even then, the rest of the bill was so awful that it was
defeated by a vote of 74 to 337 -- an amazing fate for a bill backed by
the House leadership.)

My personal favorite was a letter to Congress from a member of the
Museum Advocacy Team:

"One can only wonder what the sponsors of legislation such as this are
afraid of hearing from the people."

Makes me nostalgic for the '60s.
