DIRECTOR

Notice of Vacancy

Washington State University seeks a highly motivated and capable
Director for its Museum of Art.  The Director sets goals and objectives
for the WSU Museum of Art that coincide with the University s missions
and goals; implements its artistic and administrative policies and
procedures; and shapes the direction of its programs.  The Director s
position is full time, 12-month, permanent, nontenure track faculty
reporting to the WSU Provost.  The position is immediately available.
The salary is competitive.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
The primary responsibilities are to formulate and oversee the budget;
seek extramural support for exhibits, programs and collections;
supervise Museum personnel; oversee the physical facilities, permanent
artworks, and exhibit installations; cultivate donors and raise
privately donated funds; guide the Friends of the Museum of Art;
supervise curatorial and educational activities and programs; serve the
University as required by the Provost; contribute to the museum
profession; and contribute to public awareness of the fine arts through
scholarship.

WASHINGTON STATE UNIVERSITY:
Washington State University is a land grant comprehensive teaching and
research university with an enrollment of 17,000 students on the Pullman
campus.  There are three branch campuses and nine learning centers
located throughout the state.  There are seven academic colleges in
Pullman offering doctoral degrees in 44 disciplines and bachelors
degrees are offered in 55 areas of study.  The University is one of the
largest residential universities in the west.  It has a strong research
orientation with a commitment to quality instruction.  Pullman offers a
friendly, small-town living environment set in the Palouse country with
numerous outdoor and recreational opportunities provided.  For

MUSEUM OF ART:
The WSU Museum of Art is conveniently located in the Fine Arts Center
within the central core of the campus.  The spacious and flexible main
gallery has 5,000 square feet of exhibition space.  There is well
designed, secure storage for more than 2,000 permanent artworks, rooms
for exhibit preparation, and a suite of offices.  The Museum strives to
provide a diverse and balanced range of offerings from contemporary
sculpture, photography, paintings and ceramics to classical art from
China, weavings from Indonesia, and/or new works by American and
international artists.  Lectures, performances, docent tours and
children s programs accompany each exhibit. The University provides
permanent base funding for the staff and office operations.  Grant
funds, donations, and endowment funds provide other funding for
exhibits, programs, and acquisitions.

QUALIFICATIONS:
(REQUIRED:)
Bachelor s degree in fine arts, art history, museology, or related field
with a minimum of five years of art museum administrative and
supervisory experience or a Master s degree in the same disciplines with
a minimum of two years experience; significant curatorial, programming,
and public art education experience; demonstrated knowledge of museum
practices per AAM standards, demonstrated fund-raising skills and good
record of successful grants; and excellent spoken and written
communication skills.

Significant experience in the management of a museum of art; previous
employment by a research university; evidence of creativity; proven
ability to communicate with diverse groups; and a distinguished record
of exhibition and publication achievements.
