I don't think split is the right word.  They are very different sorts of
institutions.  History and Art museums are very focused on collections (less so
now than in the past however) while science museums focus on the show, the
concep, the exhibit-give an art museum 50 million dollars and they think great
art to own 'forever'
give a science museum 50 million and they think hall of physics with a life
span of say ten years.  That is not hard and fast-natural history museums
collect and art museum have BIG shows but art show tend to be short in
duration..
