Try _The Vanishing American Barber Shop: An Illustrated History of the
Tonsorial Art, 4860-1960_ by Ronald Barlow (1996). It's full of photos,
catalog illustrations, and other info. The William Marvy Company, which
happens to be the only U.S. manufacturer of barber poles, publishes it. If
you can't find the book near you, it is available from the company at 800
874 2651 or 612 698 0726. We are using it for an exhibit we are developing
on 20th century hairstyles.
