THE CITY OF RAISIO
Department of Culture
A FUTURE MUSEUM OF ART, ARCHAEOLOGY AND CONTEMPORARY CULTURE IS LOOKING FOR
PARTNERS
The City of Raisio (with 25000 inhabitants) on the south-western coast of
Finland is planning to open a museum in year 2000. The future museum has its
base in three lines of activities.
The Art Museum is based on a collection including a little less than 3000
Finnish, Russian and Estonian pieces of work, mainly from the last five
decades. The museum-plan also includes a media workshop, a sculpture park
and exhibitions of invited contemporary artists.
The Archaeological museum is based on remarkable data about local
pre-history, that has been collected in fieldwork started in the 1940īs and
still going on. The data is mainly about late iron-age. The Archaeological
Museum is going to use new media technology in representation of knowledge.
A Doctoral research project about illuminating history of Raisio with new
media technology is going on in the media lab of the University of Art and
Design Helsinki. It is done in association with the Academy of Finland, the
Department of Archaeology of the University of turku and the City of Raisio.
The Museum of Contemporary Culture is ment to interpret and represent
contemporary local culture and also wider or more distant phenomena of
contemporary culture. We want to deal with all kinds of subjects of present
interest multidimensionally and multidisciplinarily. The City of Raisio is
industrially structured and we are planning to co-operate with local
companies. This part of the museum will also use new technologies, but the
museum is not going to be a science center or just a museum of industrial
heritage.
We are looking forward to share information, experiences, publications,
common projects and participation in networks in any of these lines of
activities. Our target is to create a coherent whole by making the different
lines of activities communicate together as much as possible. In order to
succeed in that, we would like to find a partner that is also working in
more than one line of activities.
If you are interested in us, or if you know some museum that might be
interested in us, please contact us or bring the message further, so that we
can take you into account in our further plans.
