Art Libraries Society of North America honors book vendors, students, and
Society members
RALEIGH, NC--The Art Libraries Society of North America (ARLIS/NA), held
its 26th annual conference Convocation on March 7, 1998, at Harrison
Auditorium at the University of Pennsylvania Museum of Archaeology and
Anthropology in Philadelphia, PA , conducted by Roger Lawson, president of
the Society. During the convocation several awards and honors were bestowed.
In addition to the ARLIS/NA Research Awards, the 18th annual George
Wittenborn Memorial Book Awards given to exemplary 1997 publications and
the ARLIS/NA Distinguished Service Award presented to William J. Dane
(please refer to separate press releases), the 1998 Melva J. Dwyer Award
was presented to Loren Lerner for her publication, Canadian Film and Video:
a Bibliography and Guide to the Literature = Filme et vidéo canadiens:
bibliographie analytique sur le cinéma et la vidéo. The Dwyer Award is
given under the auspices of ARLIS/Canada, the Canadian Chapter of the Art
Libraries Society of North America, in honor of Melva Dwyer, former head
of the University of British Columbia's Fine Arts Library, and her
contribution to art librarianship. The award is given to the creators of
exceptional reference or research tools relating to Canadian art and
architecture.
Several travel awards, made possible by the generous donations of several
companies, were granted:
Jim and Anna Emmett Travel Award for information professionals who are
physically challenged awarded to Dr. Catherine Gordon, Witt Library,
Courtauld Institute of Art, London, England; Howard and Beverly Joy Karno
Travel Award for an art librarian residing in Latin America to Liliana
Bandini, Biblioteca Central, Pontificia Universidad Catolica del Peru;
David Mirvish Books/Books on Art Travel Award for a Canadian art or
architecture library professional to Ilga Leja, Nova Scotia College of Art
and Design, Halifax, NS; Puvill Libros Travel Award for a European art
information professional who resides outside North America to Simon Ford,
National Art Library, Victoria and Albert Museum, London; G. K. Hall
Conference Attendance Award for an individual member who serves as a
committee member, group moderator, or chapter officer to Kathryn L.
Corcoran, Joslyn Art Museum, Omaha, NE; and Research Libraries Group Award
to a current member who has never attended an annual conference of the
Society to Laura Graveline, Maine College of Art Library, Portland, ME. A
new travel award to encourage participation of art information
professionals in the field of photography, the Andrew Cahan Photography
Award was presented to Nina K. Stephenson, Zimmerman Library, University of
New Mexico, Albuquerque, NM.
The 1997 Gerd Muehsam Award, given annually to recognize excellence in a
graduate paper or project on a topic relevant to art librarianship or
visual resources curatorship and honoring the memory of Gerd Muehsam
(1913-1979), distinguished scholar, teacher and art bibliographer, was
presented to Erika Dowell of Indiana University for her paper,
“Interdisciplinarity and the New Methodologies in Art History: A Citation
Analysis.”
